Camping and Hunting
Cherokee County offers a plethora of camping options. Whether it’s tenting under the stars or tucked away in a luxury RV with all the amenities this is the perfect camping destination.
At Hanging Dog US Forest Recreation and Campground is currently closed but Cherokee County Commissioners are working to take control on that area and re-open the campground. Still available at the campground and by the lake is a swimming area, hiking trails, a picnic pavilion, and a boat ramp onto Hiwassee Lake. The parking area was updated in 2019 and paved providing a clean and safe area for parking and boat launching.
Murphy/Peace Valley KOA, Persimmon Creek Campground, Valley River RV Resort, WagonMaster Adventure Ranch also provide quality camping options.
Many game animals, including white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, ruffed grouse and gray squirrel, thrive in the forest. The Forest Service provides a variety of hunting opportunities, including accessible hunting in the below locations: In the following areas, there are fields adjacent to or a short distance from the road: Perry Gap Road; Deep Gap Road; Fires Creek Road; Nelson Ridge Road; Tuni Gap Road; Beech Creek Road; Panther Top Road; Powerline Cove Road; Copper Creek Road; and Davis Creek Road. Parking is available in wide areas along the roads.
